Things I Carry: SteelSeries Sensei 310 Gaming Mouse

Hi, I am Carla and I’m a casual League of Legends player.

In late November of 2018, Riot (League of Legends), released an amazing music video titled “K/DA – POP/STARS”. This video encouraged me to give the popular League of Legends game a try.

Initially I played with my MacBook’s multi-touch trackpad, but I was awful till I got my SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse. Now I’m just mediocre.

In today’s The Things I Carry post, we’ll discuss how I obtained this mouse and what my thoughts are about it.

Full Disclaimer: While this blog post is not sponsored, I did in fact get this as a gift from a fellow player on League of Legends. I got this mouse due to how badly I was playing with my multi-touch trackpad and not because I’m being ‘bribed’ for a good review.

What I love about SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse

  • It’s WAY better than the default multi-touch trackpad- For gaming and for work purposes, this mouse is significantly better than using the multi-touch trackpad that is built into my MacBook Pro. This is especially true for right clicking which sometimes can be a real struggle.

  • It lights up- Whenever I have it plugged into my MacBook, the mouse lights up on the back (where the logo is) and on the scroll wheel. It looks cool and also lets me know whether it’s plugged in or not. It also has a panel on the left side where the logo is lit up again.

  • The Scroll Wheel- While I can definitely scroll through pages with two fingers on the touch pad, it’s nice being able to also scroll with one finger instead with the scroll wheel.

What doesn’t work about SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse

  • Too many buttons- My mouse comes with six buttons, I only use two. My right click and my left click. I was not even aware until writing this post that I could configure my buttons (which should be common sense, but…) So perhaps this point will change in the future.

  • USB Connection required- I needed to purchase a USB-C to USB Adapter to use this mouse. Due to the adapter, sometimes my mouse has a tendency to disconnect while I’m in mid-game.

  • The color- My mouse is black with red lights. It’s a color combination I’m not fond of. In a perfect world I’d love a mouse that’s either white or rose gold to match my aesthetic.

Other Thoughts about SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse

I love my SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse and due to my indecisiveness and lack of knowledge about gaming mice, I really appreciate the fact that this was gifted to me. This made the selection process easy since it was simply mailed to me out of the kindness (and sympathy) of a fellow gamer who I knew as ‘Hero’.

He was certainly my hero for giving me this gift.

In a perfect world I’d love a wireless mouse that wasn’t clunky to carry around and that was fully compatible with my MacBook, but the reality is, I don’t.  Perhaps someday I’ll invest in something that matches me, but for now I’m like super happy with this mouse.

As I mentioned before, there are accessories and alternatives for the SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse

  • While I cannot find the exact adapter I use for my mouse, this 3-Pack USB C to USB is something I’d purchase. While you technically only need one to use the mouse, I have a tendency to lose things so having three around is a great solution. I remember purchasing a pack of three when I got my adapter. I keep one In my nightside table, another in my office, and the last one is on the USB of my SteelSeries mouse.

  • Nonda USB C to USB Adapter is what I’d recommend to those who are more responsible with their accessories and are interested in looks over function. It comes in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray which are the colors that a MacBook typically comes in. If there was a rose gold version, I’d probably get that one, but otherwise Space Gray is my second favorite since that’s the color of my MacBook.

  • Lention 4-in-1 USB-C Hub is what I used to use at work for my MacBook. It’s great because not only will it make your MacBook compatible with products like the SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse, but it has multiple ports and has a rose gold option.

Would I recommend SteelSeries Sensei Gaming Mouse?

It depends. If you are a pro-gamer, I’d suggest you check out what professional gamers are using in the industry for their rapid clicking games of League, or whatever the kids play these days. Personally I think it’s great for what it does and intend on keeping my mouse until it no longer works, or until I’m gifted another gaming mouse. After all, that’s the life of a work-in-progress minimalist.

Whichever one happens first.

The disappointing thing is that it seems that all gaming mice are black with different colored lights. I’ve only seen one gaming mouse that is white and it’s unrated on Amazon. So unless more gaming mice are created to fill the rose gold (or white) aesthetic I’m craving for, I guess I’m stuck with these ‘manly’ looking mice.

What mouse do you use? Is it a gaming mouse?

As I mentioned, I’m not much of a pro-gamer. Nor am I much of a tech-genius. This means that if you have any recommendations for gaming mice, feel free to comment below or tweet at me your recommendations.

Bonus points if that gaming mouse has a cute aesthetic or a girly one. I’ve been wanting to see more representation for girl gamers, even if it’s in the stereotypical ‘pink’ variants.
