2023 Reflections: What I did & What I didn't do

2023 was full of change

In 2022, my life was getting back to normal. Or at least as normal as it could be in a post-pandemic world. This was why I had planned for 2023 to be the year of change. I also inwardly told myself that this was probably the last year that my time and energy was going to be spent on me. Now that I’m married, I want to achieve my next milestone, which is starting a family. And that requires a lot of my time, and energy. So this year I really wanted to focus on me and setting the foundation for my family.

As usual, I’m going to recommend that you check out my previous reflections. It’s not mandatory, but I’m the kind of person who likes to see the growth of others, so maybe you want to read about mine? Here’s 2018, 2019, and 2022 (2020 and 2021 didn’t happen, okay?)

Let’s start reflecting on 2023

WHAT I WANTED IN 2023, AS REFLECTED BY MY VISION BOARD

  • To improve my health by taking walks, improving my “at home” cooking abilities, and learning how to better control my mind and emotions. So basically, my physical and my mental health.

  • To discover North Carolina by going on day trips, and “living like a local” so I could better understand and learn about my new home.

  • To have better style by wearing clothes that I could only pin on Pinterest or admire on other people. I love the idea of being able to express myself with fashion. To have a ‘signature look’ that is me.

  • To fill my home with nature because even though I was (and kinda am) a city girl. I love the idea of surrounding myself with nature and pretty plants.

  • To have my own home or a place to call “home”.

  • To “outsmart” rough mornings so I could get better at waking up in the morning and not feel so tired throughout the day.

  • To find an identity for my hair because after my wedding/1st anniversary in 2022, I wanted to rediscover what my hair-identity is. What should my hair look like and be like?

  • To improve my skincare, I’ve dabbled with skincare, and I want to continue figuring out how to best take care of the largest organ of my body.

  • To learn how to ask for help. I’m used to doing things on my own and relying on myself. It’s one of the lessons my grandmother taught me. However, I do know that there are people in my life who would be willing to help if only they knew I needed it.

  • To minimize waste and maximize time.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN 2023

  • I moved! This was one of the things I wanted in 2022, and I finally did it!

  • I made friends with my neighbors, one of them became a prominent figure in my life in 2023. She is also a transplant but from Connecticut. We’ve gone out for food and drinks. I stopped by a TON at her place to hang out when I felt lonely. And I also befriended a couple of neighbors with dogs in the area.

  • I explored the city of Durham by using a magazine that I found in my apartment complex about the ‘best spots to check out’ in Durham and scheduling dates/times on my calendar to check them out. Some of my favorites include The Scrap Exchange, Part and Parcel, Boxcar Bar + Arcade, and 321 Coffee,

  • I had brunch dates with my hubby on Saturday mornings. I focused primarily on breakfast spots and diners with him. My favorite brunch spot is First Watch ‘cause their Purple Haze is ah-ma-zing.

  • I started a ‘reconnecting campaign’ with my LinkedIn Connections since I realized after moving how isolated my husband and I were. So I started to reach out and ‘connect’ with all my connections. After all, a good chunk of them were people who I either really wasn’t connected with in a meaningful way or I haven’t heard since the pandemic.

  • I avoided snow in Jersey in January, which felt amazing.

  • Produced the Start Grow Manage Podcast, we used to have a third-party company producing our company’s podcast, but I took this over in 2023. You can check it out here, YouTube, or wherever you like listening to podcasts.

  • Attended various game nights in Durham, one of them being at Boxyard RTP, and it was there I met a bunch of great people. One of them is a wizard at word games. I also discovered many breweries in Durham have board game nights, which I checked out.

  • I joined the Jersey Girls of North Carolina, which was by far the most impactful group of people I met in North Carolina. These ladies did help me feel like a local; chatting with them online (and seeing them offline) was great.

  • I traveled A TON back and forth between North Carolina and New Jersey. Sometimes it was by car, other times by plane. Lots of interesting Lyft rides. Lots of Spotify playlists and audiobooks were listened to for these trips.

  • At Start Grow Manage, we officially launched Business Implementors. This was something we offered our clients to help them save hours of their week with admin work, and there was enough demand to make this its own business.

  • We had three successful SGM Summits in April, August, and December with our clients at Start Grow Manage. It was great seeing our clients in person, and I even got a cute pin that says, “I love to help” from one of our clients. (And if you ever want to join our community, you can!)

  • My husband and I started playing IRL Pokemon, and not Pokemon Go (well, yes, Pokemon Go as well), but more like we started to collect critters in our new home. My husband brought home a praying mantis and hamster in March. I caught a little green anole in April, a couple of critters, including a toad, and then we added a cat and dog in the summer. We also caught (and released) baby birds that hatched on my neighbor’s patio.

  • I started to use Descript for my video editing needs. I think it’s a great platform to edit videos quickly and effectively. I also joined a few of their CrowdCast events and Discord for additional support.

  • My hubby and I hosted some friends and family who stopped by to visit throughout the year. Granted, these guests were more family than friends, but it was still neat being on the ‘hosting’ side of things.

  • I read a few book series for pleasure, the entire Wicked Villains series by Katee Robert, “The Kiss Thief” by L.J. Shen, and The Fairy Tales Reimagined series by Laura Burton

  • I took care of my hair at Poppy’s salon. They took care of both my hair and my husband’s hair. They also carry RedKen hair products, which I was looking into, so it felt validating that they recommended the product I would get anyway.

  • I played Pokemon Go and Pokemon Sleep, which has been great for my health! Pokemon Go and their route feature constantly gave me an excuse to get out and go on walks, while Pokemon Sleep has encouraged me (and my husband) to have better sleeping habits.

  • I celebrated St. Carlos Day with my sisters, nephews, and niece. It’s one of those yearly traditions that I hold dear to my heart, especially after my dad passed away, and I’m so happy that my family is up for keeping the tradition of celebrating it alive.

  • I celebrated Thanksgiving in North Carolina with my husband and neighbor. She hosted us. My husband and I also took our dog on a playdate, which was very cool.

  • I rejoined Neopets, since they are under new management. It’s been a nostalgia trip, and it is enjoyable being in the front-row seats of the crazy “pea-gate” scandal and watching as the new owners tackle inflation with the Advent Calendar. I also joined a guild on Neopets which has helped me creatively.

UNEXPECTED EVENTS IN 2023:

  • My grandma started to fall… a lot. After we moved down, she fell a couple of times. None of these falls were fatal, but they were stressful, and I was grateful that my best friend was able to step in and help me since I was much too far away to call an ambulance or be much help.

  • I got a ton of support from my “Titi”, my second cousin, but in my eyes, she’s more like an aunt figure in my life. As my grandma’s health took a nose-dive in the summer, Titi stepped up and was able to visit my grandma while I flew in and out of Jersey in July and August.

  • I got a one-way ticket to Jersey in September as Titi could no longer help, and then I took over as primary caregiver for my grandma. This was quite the experience as I was in a whirlwind of doctor’s appointments and even property manager duties for my grandma.

  • I did PT with my grandma to help her recover. Due to her not speaking Spanish and just not following directions, I attended most of her sessions. It also was nice to get a bit of a workout myself.

  • I had to be a property manager and ask my mother-in-law to help me fix up one of my grandma’s apartments. This included a TON of Home Depot trips and asking for help to find things.

  • I went to my friend’s Halloween party, that she hosted in HER STORE. I’m so proud of her and if you are an anime fan (or are in the Bayonne area in NJ) you should stop by.

  • I learned what a lien was and definitely handled that.

  • I went to TWO school reunions! One of them was my college reunion, though admittedly, only 3 people from my actual college were there. Sadly, since my college shut down and was basically acquired by another university, there were more people from the latter. My other reunion also only had 3 other attendees, which were my middle school classmates and me seeing each other after soooooo many years. It would have been nice if more of them showed up (we were a graduating class of 16), but I appreciated it anyway.

  • I went to a Friendsgiving. Someone who I admire invited me to her Friendsgiving fiesta, and I was so honored to be there. I also was able to reconnect with a few college friends and make a couple of new ones.

WHAT I DID NOT DO IN 2023:

  • Go house-hunting, and I wish I was able to. My plan was to start hunting down a place in August, but with all the trips back and forth to Jersey, I couldn’t make house-hunting a priority.

  • Find an identify for my hair. I was able to get it looked at, but I still think I’m going through a “hair identity” crisis. However, I think I’m starting to be okay with going au natural for now. It’s cheaper and low-maintenance, and I kind of need that in my life right now.

  • Go as minimalist as I hoped, for my apartment is still cluttered with things and I’m sure I could have done a better job at decluttering and reorganizing my apartment.

  • I didn’t use Notion as much this year. Sure, there were moments I used it, like to plan for my move, to help me organize my tasks, to help me brainstorm for my grandma, and to use it as a cloud-storage solution. But after March, my daily logs on Notion were almost non-existent.

  • Fully develop my style. Though I had to admit, I bought a few pieces that make my wardrobe more ‘me’. I bought two things from PopFlex, and I get so many compliments in them, and they are comfortable. I also started wearing some slip-on sneakers, which is NOT my style, but it is easy to wear and walk in at the moment.

  • Post on this blog. Which you maybe noticed or maybe didn’t notice. Either way, it didn’t happen. I am only writing this because I want to continue the tradition. The funny thing is that I have a lot of stuff pre-written to publish… I just haven’t gone around editing and publishing them.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT 2023:

Honestly… I felt like a failure this year. I think it’s because it's been a difficult road ever since August/September of 2023. I’ve been stressing out so much over my grandmother, her property, my job, my relationships, etc., that I’ve felt like I’ve been running on a treadmill and getting nothing done.

But looking at my vision board and looking at all the things I wrote… I think I actually got a lot more done than I give myself credit for.

Like even the part of “say yes to help” came true this year as people in my life have stepped forward to help me through this difficult time. I know this is ‘woo woo’ to type, but it is like putting what you want from your brain onto a physical thing, putting it out into the universe… Kinda helps.

So here’s to a (hopefully) calmer 2024. Admittedly, I think I’ll still be in the season of change and chaos since I still need to build my foundation in my new home.

Feel free to share how your year went or what your goals/plans are for 2024.

2022 Reflections: What Did I Do & What I Didn’t Do

2022 was a recovery year.

With the chaos of 2020 and the aftermath in 2021, 2022 was a year where I was recovering from disorder and bringing back some normalcy. 2022 also was the start of my latest chapter, married life.

I didn't write a reflection post in 2021 or 2020 for this reason. But you are welcome to see my past reflections for 2019 and 2018.

Let's start reflecting on 2022.

What I wanted in 2022, as reflected by my vision board

  • To improve my health by drinking water and making choices for a healthier lifestyle.

  • To reflect on my life post-pandemic and take steps to learn and grow from it

  • To make small changes in my home so I could feel more comfortable working from home

  • To plan and execute my 1st Year Anniversary / Wedding

  • To find ways to get more fresh air

  • To plan and perhaps move from my childhood home to a new place

  • To continue celebrating the hidden holidays and find small things that spark joy in life

  • Play Ring Fit Adventure to encourage me to exercise more

  • Be more frugal with my purchases and be happy with what I have

  • To start a podcast

  • To create a 'command center' in my room where I can be organized and be more productive

  • To level up my social media game

What Actually Happened in 2022

  • Went to several wedding expos in preparation for the wedding. These include the New Jersey Bridal & Wedding Expo in Secaucus and a bridal expo at Montclair State University. My favorite vendor from these expos was Clarity Music Productions, who, while I didn't hire for the wedding, still impacted me with their live performance skills.

  • I attended the Notion Block by Block virtual conference. This was where I was inspired to gamify my Notion to encourage daily healthy habits.

  • I improved my Daily Notion pages by upgrading their look and enhancing their filters. Shout out to Christina (@ChristinaCignk), who hopped on a Zoom call at the beginning of March to help make that happen!

  • I made small steps to improve my workspace. One of those improvements was getting the Apple wireless keyboard, which is much better than the native keyboard on the MacBook. I also upgraded my computer setup from a MacBook to a Mac Studio.

  • I used ThredUp to give my clothes and my grandmother's clothes. By doing this, I could slim down my closet a bit and then use the credit I earned to get a cute jean dress in April that I ended up using several times throughout the year.

  • I started the year with a cute pink Hydraflow cup I saw on sale to improve my water-drinking habits. Later in the year, I got an actual water bottle with markings on it to help me track how much water I'm drinking throughout the day.

  • I started wearing Thinx underwear during my periods. This has helped me reduce purchasing one-time-use pads, which are super comfortable too. I recommend others do the same if they menstruate.

  • I created a few YouTube video series, such as "Nitro Type Journey to Keyboard Cat," Learning from Crypt of the Necrodancer Masters, and "Carprincess Plays Unpacking." While I didn't continue these as I got closer to my wedding date, doing these series was a great learning experience, and I had a lot of fun.

  • I participated in Improv Everywhere's MP3 Experiment Seventeen with my friends. It was the first Improv Everywhere event I participated in since the pandemic, and I was glad I did. It was a lot of fun, and it's great to add a bit of spontaneity to my otherwise somewhat predictable routine.

  • I went shopping in Walmart and Lidl on weekends so I could meal prep on Sundays and choose healthier options throughout the workweek versus ordering from Grubhub or takeout. Some of my go-to's were making sandwiches and using shredded chicken breast to make several different kinds of meals for lunch and dinner.

  • I started using the tea and other flavor packets I've gathered. This encouraged me to choose healthier alternatives to drinks instead of going to my go-to kryptonite, Sprite.

  • I attended a few craft and thrift shows as a vendor with my best friend and husband. One was the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival in May, another was Geek Flea in November, and then the Hoboken Holiday Craft Faire in December. These have been interesting to participate in, even if I was primarily there for moral support versus actually vending like my companions.

  • Tried the LifeAt Community. I joined this community to help with my loneliness with working from home. At first, it was just so I could have an 'aesthetic' webpage to look at while working, but then I joined their Discord and created a morning routine that helped get me in the proper mindset in the mornings. After a while, I dropped off, but I did appreciate the weeks I spent with them.

  • I started to run the SGM Newsletter. I began to take on the responsibility of running our company newsletter. While I'm not the principal author of it, I do make sure to gather all the content and make sure it goes out when it needs to. While I had a few initial hiccups, we are developing a better workflow for 2023. And we are even redesigning it!

  • In July, I started to incorporate 15-minute walks as a part of my daily routine. This works as both a stress reliever and an added health/exercise benefit. I would do this alone or sometimes ask my husband if he wanted to join me. As the cold weather started to roll back in, I got a WalkingPad to fulfill my walking quota in November and December.

  • I went to Savannah Comic Con with my husband and my cousin. It was great to travel during the year, and Savannah, Georgia, was lovely. The convention we went to was relatively small compared to what my husband and I are used to in New York City. However, we still had a fantastic time, and it was great chatting with the vendors and artists who got booths there.

  • I used Notion to help plan my wedding. It was indeed a monumental task to plan a wedding. Still, it wasn't unbearable, thanks to Notion, my wonderful mother-in-law, my husband, my bridesmaids, and several wonderful vendors I worked with.

  • I celebrated my 1st Anniversary and Wedding surrounded by friends and family. My husband and I wanted to throw a traditional wedding for our friends and family. It was an adventure to plan, but we could execute it in such a way that it screamed 'us.' We had our custom-made logo of our wolf and cat all over the place. I also was able to incorporate my love for Pokemon into the decor, and we even had wolf howling on our Zoom ceremony call, as well as with our DJ. While I still wish we had a place to call home first, I don't regret celebrating this special occasion surrounded by our loved ones.

  • I started to use the Charachorder. I ordered this unique keyboard in the Spring of 2022 and received it in August. However, I started using it in September, and it has been quite an adventure.

  • I created my joint bank account with my husband. As a step forward in our life together, we finally made a joint checking account. We have had joint savings account for a while (which is how we saved up for the wedding), but our next step was having a joint checking account for mutual payments.

  • I participated in (and completed) NaNoWriMo. This year, I decided to participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). However, this year I just focused on hitting the 50K word count by the end of the month versus writing an entire novel. So what did I write about? I wrote my blog posts (like this one).

  • I made several dentist appointments throughout the year. However, due to my health insurance plan, I couldn't be seen by a dentist until late autumn.

Unexpected Events in 2022:

  • A stranger paid for our meal in April! I occasionally stumble across wholesome articles or posts on Facebook about strangers paying for other people's meals, but I never imagined that it'd happen to me. Especially not to our group of friends when we went out to celebrate a birthday.

  • Had my first "old geezer" moment at Starbucks. This was hilarious because I was working quietly at a Starbucks when suddenly a swarm of teens came into Starbucks and made a ton of noise. While it was in their right to chit-chatter and gossip because they are enjoying life, I remember the fleeting thought of how I wanted these kids to "get off my proverbial lawn." But I quickly shrugged off that thought with a chuckle and appreciated how the tables had turned in my life. Because I once was one of those teens.

  • We ate at Applebees with two good samaritans. Along the line of unexpected events, one of my friends lost their iPhone. When we tracked it down using the Find My app, we connected with a couple trying to track us down. We then had dinner with them at a nearby Applebees and had a great evening.

  • I started to coach people at Start Grow Manage. As I type this, I don't mean coach as in doing business coaching. Still, in 2022 I started to give our clients and our growing team advice on email management, Asana, Loom, and several other productivity tools. It felt great being able to share my wisdom with others. And even better, the wisdom was well received.

  • I did public speaking. During the summer Westchester Angel event at Garcia's Capital Theatre in Port Chester, I was invited to say a few words to our guests, which I was unprepared for. Still, I managed to get by, crack a few light-hearted jokes, and gracefully give the microphone back to the host. Past Carla would have been impressed with my improved public speaking skills, a victory in my book.

  • Got a shrimp tank from one of my husband's co-workers. While some people add greenery to their workspace to liven it up, I initially started the year with a small and humble fish tank. Then in June, I upgraded to a shrimp tank full of colorful tiny shrimp. These have been a delight to work alongside, and they brighten my day.

What I Did Not Do in 2022:

  • I did not move out of my childhood home. However, in November, I did talk to my husband about us moving into an apartment in North Carolina. And we are starting the year of 2023 in our new apartment!

  • I did not start a podcast, but my company did! Feel free to check it out on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube

  • My social media channels still need improvement, though there were a few months when I spent more time on Twitter and YouTube and started to get some results on those platforms. I just needed to be more consistent with it.

Final Notes about 2022

When looking at my vision board, I think it is a bit bare-bones. However, it helped me prepare my mindset for this year, and the fact that it wasn't overcrowded meant I could focus on what mattered to me this year.

And if it wasn't obvious, my three main focus areas were:

  • My health

  • Preparing for the latest chapter of my life (married life)

  • Creating a comfortable work-from-home space

With those things, I did relatively well and set myself up for an adventurous 2023. So please let me know what your goals are for 2023.

Social Distancing, Isolation, and Quarantine: My Thoughts and Actions

Social Distancing, Isolation, and Quarantine: My Thoughts and Actions

I finally understand why Rapunzel wanted freedom from her tower.

It has been nearly a month since the entire world has begun to take the global pandemic of COVID19 seriously and it's been a single week since I've been confined in my room.

I went from social distancing to isolation and the difference is staggering.

2018 Reflections: What Did I Do & What I Didn't Do

2018 Reflections: What Did I Do & What I Didn't Do

Now that the year is coming to an end, I wanted to do a review of what I wanted my 2018 year to be versus what actually happened. This will be based off my Vision Board that I created in the month of January so that I have a starting point to compare the beginning of the year to the end.

The Things I Carry : Minimalist Adventure

The Things I Carry : Minimalist Adventure

I am going to look at every item I own in my bedroom and then my home office to determine what brings me joy and value in my life and what doesn’t. This process I am going to label as “The Things I Carry” series and each post will be either about a single item or a group of items that I will catalogue and critique.

Landmark Advanced : The Game of Winning

Landmark Advanced : The Game of Winning

Have you ever played the Game Boy Advanced? It was this handheld console created in the early 2000s that was an upgrade from the Game Boy Color. This device was 'backward compatible' which meant that it played the games from both the Game Boy and the Game Boy Color, but it also had its own Game Boy Advanced games.

I bring it up because not only do both the Advanced Course by Landmark and the Game Boy Advanced have the word 'advanced' in their names, but because the comparisons between the two can help you see through my eyes how I felt about the course. Yes, be prepared to learn about Landmark from a gamer's perspective.

You should read my first entry about Landmark first before continuing.
